My insight into the world of print
Hi, I’m Phoebe. For Year 10 work experience I spent 4 days at Impressu Print Group.
Over my placement, I spent time in many areas including marketing, which taught me the importance of finding cliental through many different means.
I also spent time in the art room, which deals with the graphic design and pre-press procedures.
The graphic design team works hard to make everything perfect for the customer before the pre-press team makes sure everything’s perfect for the printers’ formats.
After the artroom, I spent time on the floor, where I learnt about the backbone of the printing industry, the printers themselves.
Impressu has many different printers, from a 10-colour machine that loads paper here…
…moves the paper through 10 different colours…
Before ending here with the final image printed on.
To another of their newer machines, the digital printer, described to me as the ‘photo copier’. This machine is computer operated and is used for smaller jobs that frequently vary in design.
Lastly I spent time learning about the machines that have been working longer than most of the employees running them have been alive.
With no digital interference, these machines are some of the oldest automatic letter press machines, and are still just as, if not more, consistent then their newer counterparts.
After everything is printed and folded, it gets sent here, ready for delivery to customers.
So, what have I learnt? I’ve learnt that every pamphlet or brochure or poster has a story. It started as an idea from the customer, the design team turned an idea into an image, the pre-press team readied and formatted it for the floor team, and finally the floor team worked hard to print, crease, fold and put together everything that came through, ready to send to their assortment of cliental.
So thankyou Impressu for giving me the opportunity to work for 4 days, with the incredible team and amazing industry that they work in every day.
